What is Nihil?
Nihil is an ongoing conceptual artwork that exists and unfolds within social media.
Instagram, TikTok and Facebook are not used as promotional tools, but as the space in which the artwork takes place. Every publication, every view and every interaction forms part of a continuous process that evolves over time.
The work does not pursue virality or content optimization. Nor does it seek to offer a closed narrative or a single message. Instead, it creates a space for observation where repetition, absence and permanence replace the constant search for stimulation that characterizes today’s digital environment.
Nihil does not attempt to compete with the content that surrounds it.
It simply remains.
The Project
We live in a digital environment designed to capture our attention continuously. Platforms reward novelty, entertainment, immediacy and the constant production of content.
Nihil proposes the opposite.
Through monochromatic publications, a repetitive structure and an unchanging protocol, the artwork deliberately removes almost every element that normally generates engagement.
There are no descriptive images.
No narrative.
No characters.
No explanations.
No call to action.
Only a constant presence that remains unchanged while everything around it changes.
Over time, the artwork ceases to be defined solely by its publications and begins to be shaped by the responses of those who encounter it and by the way the platforms themselves distribute its content.
The Protocol
The entire artwork follows a fixed protocol that remains unchanged.
Each month is represented by a single monochromatic colour.
Black.
White.
Black.
White.
One piece is published every day.
On odd-numbered days, a monochromatic image is published.
On even-numbered days, a 30-second monochromatic video is published.
Every day, a story is shared featuring the statement of the current monthly cycle.
The monthly statement remains unchanged throughout the entire cycle.
Only on the final day of the month does a closing statement appear before the next cycle begins.
The protocol is never modified according to the results obtained.
The artwork does not adapt to trends, audience behaviour or algorithmic performance.
If something changes, it is the environment.
The artwork remains the same.
The Archive
Although the artwork exists on social media, its entire evolution is documented in a permanent archive.
This archive brings together the complete journey of Nihil from the beginning of the project.
It includes the documentation of every monthly cycle, digital editions, monthly reports, annual reports, future exhibitions and every document that forms part of the artwork’s development.
The archive does not seek to explain how Nihil should be interpreted.
Its purpose is to preserve the memory of the project.
The Monthly Digital Edition
Each month, a single Monthly Digital Edition is released.
This edition includes an A5 digital composition corresponding to the monthly cycle and a Certificate of Authenticity with a unique Edition ID.
At the end of the cycle, every collector also receives a Monthly Record, a document that records the complete development of that month’s cycle.
This document includes the public metrics of the cycle, the total number of collectors and the information required to document that specific fragment of the artwork.
It is not a performance report.
It is a historical record.
Every contribution helps ensure the continuity of the project and becomes part of its permanent archive.
Methodology
Nihil does not seek to prove a theory or provide answers.
The artwork establishes a simple set of rules and remains faithful to them over time.
Repetition, duration and permanence constitute the project’s primary material.
The viewer is free to observe, ignore or leave the artwork at any moment.
The platforms are free to distribute it or allow it to disappear among millions of other publications.
None of this alters the protocol.
The artwork continues to exist.
Not meant to be consumed.
